Born in Pingtung, Taiwan to parents who hail from the Rukai and Paiwan aboriginal tribes, David Yin-Wei Lin currently resides in Taipei. As a young fan of Gu Long’s wuxia novel Sentimental Swordsman, Ruthless Sword, he became an admirer of the tender and benevolent protagonist in the novel, and named himself Li Xunhuan after the protagonist. He established his own design studio “DESIGN-LEE.” in 2006.

Lin currently works as a freelance creative, branching from his home field of theater to graphic design and imaging. After establishing the theater company Never Trick Art Theater in March, 2006, he and his troupe have performed at the Crown Theatre and Guling Street Avand-garde Theatre in Taipei, Artstock 20 in Taichung, the Space of Theatre Mechanics of the Tainaner Ensemble in Tainan, and the Spring Wind Art Theatre in Kaohsiung. Works written and directed by him include Who Should Lie to Whom (2005), The Way Passed Away (2006), Niuku (2007), and The Wind of Intending (2008). His works have been presented at lectures at National Taiwan Normal University, Tamkang University and National Taiwan University. In addition, he has served as the drama club instructor at Suao Junior High School in Yilan, and as a judge on the review panel for the 2009 Aboriginal Artist-In-Residence program. Lin has also worked on large-scale stage productions, including serving as executive director for the 2011 Pili Symphonic Fantasia, a major outdoor performance organized by the Preparatory Office of the National Headquarters of Taiwan Traditional Arts, and featuring the Kaohsiung City Symphony Orchestra. He has also served as marketing executive for the modern dance company Dance Forum, producer for the Crown Art Festival from 2009 to 2011, editor for the theatrical performance website MJKC.tw, and personnel coordinator for the 2009 Taipei Deaflympics opening ceremony. He has also been involved in visual art design projects for the Performing Arts Alliance, the Taipei Arts Festival, and numerous artistic groups and companies.

According to noted theatre critic Yu Shan-Lu, Lin’s work “possesses a sense of maturity and philosophical contemplation rarely seen in the post-1980 generation, often touching upon memory, growing up, history and one’s home as his subjects. Working through multiple levels of humanity, psychology and philosophy, his style is marked by a richness in reflection and humanistic thought, while a sense of poetry runs through his theatrical language.”
